In roots of resistant potatoes the activity of both acid and alkaline phosphatase increased after root invasion by H. rostochiensis larvae, being localized mainly in necrotic cells. This phenomenon was not observed in roots of susceptible potatoes. Histochemical tests carried out did not show the presence of acid phosphatase in giant cells. It is suggested that the high activity of acid phosphatase in necrotic cells induced by nematodes in roots of resistant potatoes may, among other factors, lead to a decomposition of high-energy compounds, and in this way reduce cell metabolism.
