Nematicidal control of ring nematode lowered rice yields in plots infested with yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus). Control of nematodes stimulated weed growth more than rice growth. Nematode control plus weed removal produced large, significant increases in rice yield. This is the first report of a migratory root-parasitic nematode, and of a ring nematode, (Criconemoides onoensis), of uniform distribution across many soil series, in a large region, producing significant and symptom-less yield reductions in a major crop. Common association in paddy rice of nematodes and weed hosts suggests similar interactions may be widespread.
