The effect of the stubby-root nematode, Paratrichodorus anemones on growth of spring barley and wheat and the plants' ability to recover from attack was studied. Although roots were stunted by nematode feeding, some recovery occurred when the plants were exposed to nematodes for only the first 6 weeks of the plant's life. After this, the plant's capacity to compensate was greatly reduced. Yields decreased sharply for each additional 2 weeks exposure, up to 8 weeks but declined only slightly thereafter. Nematode numbers doubled under wheat and trebled under barley.
