The seventh instar larva of Galleria mellonella is killed by Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and its associated bacterium Xenorhabdus luminescens at temperatures from 12° to 28°. Whereas nematode development is inhibited at 12° and 30°, Xenorhabdus can grow and cause mortality from 12° to 33°. The length of the incubation period depends on the bacterial growth rate. Ninety-five percent of invasive juvenile nematodes survived more than 60 days in quarter strength Ringer's solution.
