The stylet morphology of females of sixteen Meloidogyne species is examined by scanning electron microscopy to clarify details seen with the light microscope: different populations of M. graminicola, M. graminis, M. naasi, M. hapla and M. javanica are also included. Species-specific features are found in the general form of the stylet, shape of the cone, shaft and knobs. Together with measurements of stylet length, stylet cone length and stylet knobs width and length, morphological differences between species may be used as an aid to identification when combined with other species-specific characters from females, males and second-stage juveniles. The structure of the stylet in different species is discussed in relation to their hosts.
