Susceptible and resistant (H1) potato cultivars were grown in nematode-infested experimental fields in Northern and Southern Finland. The resistant cultivars yielded well in Southern Finland, and they also satisfactorily reduced the nematode populations. In the northern experimental field at the Arctic Circle the nematode population decreased and seemed to disappear, as it also did under susceptible potatoes. Soil temperature and the length of the growing season are not sufficient for the potato cyst nematodes to establish and reproduce in the northern parts of Finland. Further studies on the population biology of potato cyst nematodes in northern regions are needed due to the importance of these areas in the production of seed potatoes.
