The mutant barley variety, 2076/4-10, despite fewer root tips, supported a similar number of nematodes g-1 root and significantly more nematodes cm-1 root than its parent variety 'Bomi' : fewer second stage juveniles emerged and invaded the host compared to the parent. The mutant had fewer seminal root axes than the parent, was equally susceptible to attack by H. avenae but was less tolerant. Since the mutant had more nematodes cm-1 root than 'Bomi' and suffered extensive damage to growth and development of its root system, compared to the parent 'Bomi', the parameter, nematodes cm-1 root, is useful for determining the effects of nematode invasion on root growth.
