Different characters used to identify species of the genus Rotylenchus have been evaluated. Ninety-one populations belonging to 45 species of the genus were subjected to principal component analyses. Ten characters representing the general size effect contributed similarly to the OTUs' dispersion along the first principal component. Larger species were pushed in a positive direction. Relatively fewer characters were responsible for the dispersion along the second principal component. Two new ratios are proposed. Ratio k = width of spear knobs/height of spear knobs, as an index of flatness of the knobs, and rb = length of median bulb/width of median bulb, as an index of roundness of the median bulb. The actual value of the distance from outlet to spear base should be used instead of ratio O.
