Filenchus discolabialis sp. n. from the rhizosphere of Ophilopogon japonicus in Kochi, Japan is described and illustrated. The new species is characterized by a pronounced disc on the lip, long amphidial slits, short body (270-317 μm), short spear (6.0-6.5 μm) and is distinguished from the three known species with a labial disc by the two lateral-field incisures. Three additional populations of F. helenae in Japan have been measured and are described and illustrated. The use of characters to differentiate between F. discrepans and F. helenae is discussed based on the reported facts and the observations of character variability in the Japanese populations. It is suggested that F. helenae is a junior synonym of F. discrepans.
