Waste management law in Greece is characterized by an effort to adapt to the requirements of European Community waste management law. Late transpositions, cumbersome administrative procedures, a focus on technical standards and a policy based primarily on controlled disposal have dominated Greek waste management law until its most recent third modification which simplified and clarified procedures considerably. The legal framework in relation to recovery of packaging and packaging waste and "other waste products" was recently put in operation and shows some positive results. A major legislative effort is still required to update Greek waste management law at the proper legislative level.
