The cuticle of the evaporative area of the metathoracic scent glands of adult heteropterans shows marked structural modifications. One specialized type of cuticle is covered by micro-flakes supported and interconnected by low ridges. In Lygaeidae and Pyrrhocoridae this cuticle is found along the borders of the evaporative areas, whereas in the Pentatomidae it covers most of this area. The structure and distribution of this specialized cuticle is supposedly connected with the spreading of the volatile scent fluid.
