image of Insect Systematics & Evolution

The author has studied an extensive material of Malthinus from the Canaries using both external and aedeagal characters. The males have always been found to be identifiable, whereas a reliable determination of the females is often very difficult or even impossible. As a result of the investigation the following new species could be described: lindbergi n.sp., minimus n.sp., fuerteventurensis n.sp., nigrescens n.sp., israelsoni n.sp., bandamensis n.sp., neglectus n.sp. and maspalomensis n.sp. A good species is also depauperatus Woll. (=mutabilis var. depauperatus Woll.). The number of the Malthinus species known from the Canarian has thus increased from 2 to 11. An illustrated key to the Canarian Malthinus is presented. The distribution of the different species is accounted for in detail, and notes are given on their ecology.
