image of Insect Systematics & Evolution

The genus Brachyderes Schönherr (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). - B. lusitanicus (F.) was collected in 1953 and 1957 on Fuerteventura and reported here as new for the islands (f. typica). From Gomera and Lanzarote so far no species belonging to this genus is known. According to Harald and HÅkan Lindberg (1958:40-41) each of the islands of Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria has its own, specific species of Brachyderes. Viedma (1966:595), however, considers these four species to be geografically separated subspecies only, an opinion strongly supported by the results of this investigation: B. rugatus rugatus Woll. (La Palma), B.r.calvus Uytt. (Gran Canaria), B.r.sculpturatus Woll. (Tenerife) and B.r.hierroënsis Har. Lindb. (Hierro).
