This paper is the first of a series of re visionary works concerned with the Old World Microveliinae. The taxonomic status of Pseudovelia Hoberlandt is discussed. In order to serve the stability of nomenclature, P. tibialis Esaki & Miyamoto is designated as new type-species to replace Microvelia majnr Poisson (misidentified, belongs to the genus Xiphoveloidea Hoberlandt). Perivelia Poisson is a new synonym of Pseudovelia, which is redescribed. The Oriental species of Pseudovelia s.str. are reviewed and a key is given. Four new species are described: P. longitarsa (China), P. buccula (Thailand), P. lundbladi (Peninsular Malaysia), and P. borneensis (Sarawak, Sabah) n.spp. The following nomenclatural changes are presented: P. crassipes (Lundblad) n.syn. (= P. sexualis (Paiva) n.comb.), P. hypodonta (Lundblad), P. tjurupensis (Lundblad), and P. feuerborni (Lundblad), all n.comb.
