[Williella gen. n., with the two species sauteri sp. n. (type-species) and angulata sp. n., is described from New Caledonia and tentatively assigned to the base of the Archipini. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of the overall plesiomorphic morphology of Williella the genus is associated with a small group of isolated and generalized Tortricinae in Australia, New Zealand and southern South America. The hypothesis is proposed that these today isolated, predominantly plesiomorphic taxa are descendants of a group of very generalized Tortricinae that were distributed throughout the Gondwana continent prior to its fragmentation., The following 13 new species of Symploce from the island of New Guinea are described: ambuntiensis, baiyerensis, buloloensis, brandti, catalinaensis, centralensis, kaindiensis, laeensis, lobifera, oriomoensis, papuensis, propebaiyerensis, and wauensis. Species groups are defined, relationships are indicated, and a key to males is given.]
