When I began my studies in the United Sates soon after the Pacific War, I was deeply moved to read Harukanaru sanga-ni (In the faraway mountains and rivers), a collection of writings by students at the University of Tokyo or Todai (then the Tokyo Imperial University) who had been killed in the war. It was published in December 1947 by the University of Tokyo Co-op Publishing Department. I was filled with sorrow that those fine, able men had to die in a war that they did not want and could not control. The book was followed, in October 1949, by a sequel, Kike wadatsumi no koe (Listen to the voices from the sea), a collection of letters, diary entries, and other writings by students from Todai and other colleges and universities.
