Yenching is the most renowned of the Christian colleges in China. Whether in regard to the scale of the university, the atmosphere of the campus, or the quality of the faculty, Yenching’s reputation was comparable to China’s most well known national universities. However, the founder of Yenching, John Leighton Stuart, served as the American ambassador to China at a very sensitive period in Sino-American relations. Mao Zedong’s condemnation of Stuart’s actions as ambassador placed a shadow over Yenching that made it difficult for historians to evaluate Yenching University’s contributions to China.
