The author reflects on how a personal library mirrors the different stages of one’s life. Phases of collecting books on philosophy, mountaineering, gardening, 20th-century history, regions of the world, biography/autobiography, and fiction arose from the priorities of particular times in the author’s life. Revisiting the books in his library late in life has enabled him to contemplate the patterns and pathways of his life and the ways that books have both reflected and impacted on them.
