For almost eight centuries, Avicenna’s philosophical compendium the Kitāb al-Ishārāt wa-l-tanbīhāt (Pointers and Reminders) served as a textbook in the madrasas. Written in a compact style, it elicited more commentaries and super-commentaries than any of his other works. Over the last hundred and fifty years or so, the Ishārāt has often been printed in parallel with one or more of its commentaries. None of these prints are reliable. There also exist some editions, whose quality remains however entirely unexplored. The present article aims at filling this gap and will conclude that we stand much in need of a modern, dependable edition.
