This essay offers insights and perspectives on studying and understanding the 1948 war, the first war between Israel and the Arabs, and specifically, the Palestinian defeat. The impact of this event, known to the Palestinians as the Nakba (catastrophe) continues to fuel much of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
