ABSTRACT A new species of interstitial harpacticoid copepod, Forficatocaris schadeni (Parastenocarididae) is described from a wet campo (field) in central Brazil. Males of F. schadeni differ from all previously described species in possessing a subterminal hypophysis extending well past the end of the endopod of leg 4, together with a strong lateral spine on leg 5. Females are distinguished by the small, triangular, flat outer subterminal spine of leg 5. This is the first record of this genus on a highly organic substrate. The wet campo habitat is described; it seems similar in stability to the psammic habitats of other forficatocarid species. Keys to known species of Forficatocaris are furnished.
