Abstract The panopeid crab Panopeus margentus is known to inhabit intertidal and subtidal temperate waters of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, from Rio de la Plata to Mar del Plata, Argentina. The complete larval development of this species is described from laboratory-reared material and compared with known larvae of Panopeus, Eurypanopeus, and Hexapanopeus. A preliminary key for the identification of panopeid megalopae from the temperate waters of the southwestern Atlantic is provided.
