Indeed if he have executed his task with fidelity and elegance, he may in some degree appropriate it; he becomes part-owner of it; he is unquestionably author of the translated book; and that book is as much an original in England, for instance, as that from which it is taken is in Germany. Add to this, the labour and pains, the toilsome drudgery it costs, to become thoroughly master of a foreign tongue, its various idioms and phraseology; not to mention that he must also have those of his own, with a great choice of words at command, a matter of no vulgar attainment; and the liberal mind will hardly begrudge him the portion of praise which legitimately accrues to him from his performance.'
