L'A. ricostruisce l'evoluzione del compasso Galileiano attraverso lo studio di due manoscritti sconosciuti ad Antonio Favaro ed i testi pubblicati nelle Opere di Galileo (Vol. 2). I primi manoscritti descrivono una sorta di strumento derivato da due invenzioni di Niccol Tartaglia e dal settore di Guidobaldo del Monte. Si dimostra inoltre come il quasi contemporaneo settore inglese di Thomas Hood sia stato sviluppato indipendentemente.
