L'autore descrive uno strumento basato sulla proiezione stereografica utilizzabile sia per la misurazione del tempo che per la soluzione di problemi relativi alla determinazione della posizione del sole. Lo strumento fu al centro di una violenta disputa relativa alla priorit dell'invenzione. Nell'articolo si ricostruiscono i temi del dibattito, e si traccia la storia dello strumento del quale si fornisce anche una lista di esemplari che sono giunti fino a oggi.
