Galileo aveva appreso durante gli studi universitari le tradizionali misure e distanze dei corpi celesti. Il telescopio, tuttavia, gli mostr come le stelle fisse e i?CTRLerr type="1" mess="Doute Cars isoles avec recollage" ? pianeti possedevano diametri apparenti inferiori a quelli che si era ritenuto fino allora. Pur facendo riferimento a questa scoperta in varie opere, Galileo non prepar mai un nuovo schema a sostituzione di quello tradizionale. Lo fece per la prima volta Martinus Hortensius nel 1633. Le opinioni di Galileo relative alle distanze non si differenziarono da quelle accettate comunemente; perci il suo sistema solare era identico nella grandezza a quello di Copernico, con l'eccezione della terra, che, dopo il sole, veniva ad essere di gran lunga il corpo pi grande.
