All'inizio nelle scienze esatte le misurazioni erano effettuate con strumenti molto approssimativi. L'astronomia, "pioniera" tra le scienze esatte, si svilupp con strumenti elementari fino al telescopio e al micrometro di Galileo. Galileo ha aperto una nuova era anche nella fisica con strumenti e metodologie semplici per la misurazione di moti naturali. L'autore analizza le misurazioni contenute negli appunti di lavoro di Galileo fino a poco tempo fa ignorate dagli studiosi.
