This article looks at the relationship between information about the landscape and geography of Anatolia in the period from the 7th to 11th c. A.D., the practical strategic arrangements put in place by the eastern Roman government in dealing with its enemies, and the communications which bound frontier or operational regions to their hinterlands, sources of supplies and reserves of manpower. It demonstrates the association between the physical structures through which information was gathered and the types of information which were deployed, and suggests that Byzantine defensive arrangements could be both sophisticated and effective.
