This study digitally characterized calla lily flowers (Zantedeschia aethiopica) in different postharvest stages based on their shapes. Digital images of 50 calla lily flowers were acquired by using a digital camera connected to a portable computer. Two reflectors equipped with incandescent lamps provided more diffuse illumination on the flowers. Digital images were converted from RGB to L*a*b* color space; images were segmented based on an iterative threshold method; and signature and shape indexes of compactness, roundness, elongation, and circularity were determined. It could be concluded that by using the signature of radius versus angle and the circularity index it was possible to characterize the shape of calla lily flowers, thereby distinguishing different postharvest stages in a reliable, efficient, and precise way. These parameters can be used as shape descriptors, comprising a knowledge base for an automatic classification systems of calla lily flowers.
