ABSTRACT Striated muscle is incorporated within the wall of the dorsal abdominal aorta in the palinurid lobster Panulirus interruptus. This muscle apparently functions in vasomotion and is likely to be a remnant of the heart. Analysis of this system lends insight into the evolution of the eumalacostracan abdomen and the caridoid escape reaction.
